Protective headgear comprising: a) a substantially rigid helmet shell shaped to fit over a head and to form protection over both sides of a face; b) removeable face pads attached to the shell along both sides of a face, said face pads being removeable while the helmet is on a head; c) the face pads preventing removal of the helmet shell from the head without removal of the face pads from the shell before removal of the helmet from the head.
